Why they are here
A community politician from St Catherine who became Jamaica's first woman prime minister in 2006 and served again from 2012 to 2016.
Simpson-Miller rose through the People's National Party from local politics in the constituency of South West St Andrew, which she represented for decades. Her plain speech and her identification with poor Jamaicans won her the nickname 'Mama P'.
