Why they are here
A Baptist deacon from Stony Gut in St Thomas who led a march on the Morant Bay courthouse in protest at injustice and poverty.
The protest of October 1865 turned into an uprising; the governor, Edward John Eyre, crushed it with hundreds of executions and floggings, and Bogle was hanged. The scale of the reprisals caused a political storm in Britain. Bogle was named a National Hero in 1969.
