Edna Manley

1900 – 1987

The sculptor who helped found modern Jamaican art

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Jamaica Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

An English-born sculptor, the wife of Norman Manley, whose carvings of Jamaican people helped start a national art movement.

Works such as 'Negro Aroused' (1935) gave visual form to the awakening of Jamaican nationalism. Manley taught and encouraged young artists for decades, and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston bears her name.
