The singer and songwriter who carried reggae to the whole world
Peerless is level 1 of 4 in the Jamaica Hall of Fame: changed the field itself. Tell the country's story without them and the story breaks. See how the levels work.
Why they are here
Born at Nine Mile in St Ann, Marley made reggae a global music and became the most recognised Jamaican who ever lived.
With the Wailers, and later under his own name, Marley recorded songs such as 'One Love', 'Redemption Song', 'No Woman, No Cry' and 'Get Up, Stand Up' that spread Rastafari ideas and a message of resistance and unity far beyond the Caribbean. At the One Love Peace Concert in 1978 he brought the leaders of Jamaica's two rival parties onto the stage together. He died of cancer in 1981, aged 36.
